There are few places in the world where arriving by boat feels entirely natural. The Amalfi Coast is at the top of that list.
The famous ribbon of road carved into the cliffs is spectacular, but it is also famously congested, winding, and not ideal for those who are prone to motion sickness. Experiencing this coastline from the water is another world entirely. The sea becomes your highway, colorful villages can be admired from the most beautiful angle, and each arrival feels wonderfully cinematic.
While sailing aboard Satori, I had the opportunity to visit a few of the Amalfi Coast’s most celebrated hotels, and spend time at one of Positano’s most coveted beach clubs. Together, they represent some of the finest places to stay for travelers who appreciate impeccable service, thoughtful design, and effortless access by sea.
One additional property, Villa Treville, wasn’t part of my site visits, but its extraordinary setting and reputation make it well worth considering as you plan an Amalfi Coast journey.
If you are planning an itinerary along this remarkable stretch of coastline, these are the properties I would place at the very top of the list.
Planning Your Journey
The Amalfi Coast is most easily accessed via Naples International Airport, which offers direct connections from many major European and international cities. From the airport, the journey to the coast takes just over an hour by private transfer, with Salerno and Positano both serving as convenient starting points.
Whether you’re planning to explore by sea or settle into one of the region’s exceptional hotels, the transition from airport to coastline is straightforward. Combining a few nights on land with time aboard a yacht creates a seamless itinerary, allowing you to appreciate the Amalfi Coast from every perspective.
Borgo Santandrea
Contemporary. Light-filled. Effortlessly Italian.
My morning began at the hotel’s private pier before making my way up to breakfast and a tour of the property.
Much of the Amalfi Coast celebrates classic Italian grandeur. Borgo Santandrea offers bright interiors, clean architectural lines, carefully chosen furnishings, and an atmosphere that feels contemporary while remaining unmistakably Italian.
Breakfast on the terrace quickly became my favorite moment of the visit. Savoring my morning coffee overlooking the Mediterranean while elegant Riva boats drifted in and out below is a memory I’ll treasure for years to come.
Each room has been individually designed using handmade Vietri tiles, local stone, and mid-century furnishings. I would recommend booking a Deluxe Room or above to enjoy the full sea view. For those celebrating something special, the suites with private plunge pools offer a spectacular setting.
Dining is central to the Borgo Santandrea stay. Chef Crescenzo Scotti’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Alici, showcases the flavors of the region with great finesse.
Borgo Santandrea strikes a wonderful balance between contemporary design and authentic Italian hospitality. Stylish and current without ever feeling trendy.
Perfect for: Couples, honeymooners, and families looking for contemporary luxury with direct access to the sea.
Il San Pietro di Positano
Timeless. Romantic. Classic Amalfi glamour.
Il San Pietro di Positano is classic Italian glamour at its finest, gracious, elegant, and wonderfully authentic. This hotel carries the confidence that comes from decades of extraordinary hospitality.
If you’re planning a stay, I would recommend reserving the Elite Room with its generous sea-view terrace. Waking to uninterrupted views across the Mediterranean is exactly the Positano dream so many peole imagine.
Spending time in the gardens is a must. Bougainvillea spills over every terrace. Fragrant frangipani perfumes the sea air. Roses bloom in every direction. The gardens are lovingly maintained under the watchful eye of the family’s matriarch, now in her nineties, who still walks the property each morning with her little dog. It’s one of those details that says everything about the soul of the hotel.
Lunch introduced me to one of the simplest and most memorable dishes of the journey. The hotel’s famous lemon spaghetti deserves every bit of its reputation. Fresh, fragrant, and beautifully balanced, it is a dish I would happily travel back for.
One delightful surprise was the ingenious elevator carved directly through the mountain. In just a few minutes it transports guests from the hotel to the private beach club below, creating one of the most memorable experiences anywhere along the Amalfi Coast.
Don’t miss the complimentary daily boat excursion along the coastline, complete with aperitivo, or reserve a lesson on the spectacular seaside tennis court.
Perfect for: Couples, honeymooners, and multi-generational families with older children.
Villa Treville
Private. Artistic. Wonderfully secluded.
Although I didn’t have the opportunity to visit Villa Treville during my time aboard Satori, it remains one of the Amalfi Coast properties I most look forward to experiencing.
Perched above Positano on a secluded stretch of coastline, Villa Treville occupies what was once the private estate of legendary film director Franco Zeffirelli. Today, the collection of villas offers an elegant sanctuary, where lush gardens, sun-drenched terraces, and uninterrupted sea views create a wonderful sense of privacy and escape.
With just seventeen individually designed rooms and suites, each thoughtfully appointed with handcrafted Italian furnishings, colorful ceramics, and carefully curated artwork, Villa Treville celebrates the spirit of the Amalfi Coast while preserving the character of the original estate.
Guests arrive by private boat or make the scenic walk from Positano, and once settled in, many find little reason to leave. Long lunches overlooking the Mediterranean, afternoons spent beside the water, and evenings beneath the stars define the rhythm of a stay here.
Villa Treville is the property I would recommend to clients seeking privacy, impeccable service, and an Amalfi Coast hotel with a genuine sense of place. It has been firmly on my list for years, and after spending time along this magnificent coastline, I hope to experience it on my next visit.
Perfect for: Couples, honeymooners, milestone celebrations, and travelers seeking one of Positano’s most exclusive retreats.
Le Sirenuse Mare Beach Club
One of the great pleasures of exploring the Amalfi Coast by yacht is discovering places that are best enjoyed from the water.
While the iconic Le Sirenuse hotel sits high above Positano and is not directly accessible by boat, its beautiful new beach club, Le Sirenuse Mare in nearby Nerano, most certainly is. Guests staying at Le Sirenuse enjoy complimentary daily boat transfers between the hotel and the beach club, while visitors arriving by private yacht can step directly onto the club’s private jetty.
Built on a series of garden terraces that gently descend to the sea, Le Sirenuse Mare captures everything I love about an Amalfi Coast summer. A leisurely lunch overlooking the water, an afternoon stretched out on a sunbed, refreshing swims in the crystal-clear Mediterranean, a browse through the beautiful Emporio Sirenuse boutique, and perhaps one final cocktail before returning to the yacht. It is the sort of place where hours seem to disappear without notice.
The RTLM Take
One of the greatest joys of what we do at RTLM is matching our travel club members with the hotel or destination that suits them perfectly.
Borgo Santandrea offers bright, contemporary design paired with relaxed Italian hospitality, making it an easy choice for travelers who appreciate thoughtful architecture and modern luxury.
Il San Pietro embraces the enduring romance that has defined the Amalfi Coast for generations, where every terrace, garden, and meal tells part of the family’s remarkable story.
Treville, a luxury 16-room cliff side estate, is simply one of the most romantic places one might stay on the coast!
The beauty of combining these hotels with a yacht like Satori is that the sea becomes part of the journey, not simply the view. Days drift between villages, beaches, and hidden coves, with each arrival by boat feeling every bit as memorable as the destination itself.
After seeing the Amalfi Coast this way, I cannot imagine arriving any other way.
