I admit, I normally post my impressions and recap very soon after returning from a special destination. My journey to Miraval in Tucson, AZ in March with 13 girlfriends was somehow different.

Many of my blogs are chock full of images taken on my iPhone, but unlike other journeys, at Miraval I didn’t really cart my electronics around this trip and frankly, not sure how great pictures would be with most guests running around either in robes or sweaty workout gear. The truth of the matter is, that after a long weekend of joyfully detoxing my body, mind and spirit, I was much too zen than to jump back into my normal post-travel routines.

So what is Miraval all about? I think each lady that I traveled with would answer this in a completely different way. Everyone that goes to Miraval, goes for a different reason, or at least finds a different result.

While I did not drop a single pound, I can say without hesitation I emptied my mind and body of a great deal of junk and found myself much more in balance, not just physically, but maybe even more so mentally.

The concept at Miraval is to find your personal inner balance and that is for you to determine on your own or with their many specialists on staff. The Miraval experience is a very flexible one – come for as long or as little as you like, sign up for non-stop fitness classes or spend all your time in the spa or even at the pool, eat whatever you like and even enjoy a couple glasses of wine if you choose. It is not about restricting what you consume, but offering you the freshest organic choices, all delicious, colorful, and perfectly prepared. Most importantly are the portions, they are “normal” – not normal to your typical American restaurant standard but normal to what our bodies need. For example, it was not unusual during dinner for our group to enjoy two appetizers, an entrée, and some dessert. The choices are so plentiful that this was a fabulous way to try a bit of everything but to never feel stuffed. Everything is healthful but incredibly satisfying, no guilt in sight. In fact, quite the opposite – nourishing reward.

Miraval’s motto is “You wont find you anywhere else” and this is where the spiritual side comes in. Many of the lecturers on staff are there to help you find you – whether it be to get over a hang up, face a loss, take on a challenge, manage grief, or simply to help you start a new phase of your life. The counselors are happy to take a walk and talk in the desert with you, meet up over a tennis match, at the ropes and zip line courses and even at the equine center with Wyatt, the horse whisperer. Even the skeptics found remarkable revelations. The tactics are varied and most physical activities come with a message, a take a way, a thought provoking “AH HA” moment.

The guests at Miraval are couples, ladies groups, multi-generational adult families, mother-daughter or father-daughter visits, but the greatest thing is this is the type of place that many people travel to alone and focus completely on ‘me’ time, quite comfortably. Those seeking out Miraval are of all ages (over 18), of all fitness levels, coming for their own reason and with their own goals in mind.

Even in our ladies group, no two people had the same schedule nor left with the same experience – Miraval is about your own personal journey.

What did I leave with? I felt stronger, more healthful, clear-headed and de-cluttered.  Don’t you think that each of us owe this to our loved ones and co-workers?
